Breaking Sky – Cori McCarthy – Sourcebooks Fire – Published March 10 2015

In this high-flying, adrenaline-fueled debut thriller, America’s best hope is the elite teen fighter pilots of the United Star Academy

Chase Harcourt, call sign “Nyx,” is one of only two pilots chosen to fly the experimental “Streaker” jets at the junior Air Force Academy in the year 2048. She’s tough and impulsive with lightning-fast reactions, but few know the pain and loneliness of her past or the dark secret about her father. All anyone cares about is that Chase aces the upcoming Streaker trials, proving the prototype jet can knock the enemy out of the sky.

But as the world tilts toward war, Chase cracks open a military secret. There’s a third Streaker jet, whose young hotshot pilot, Tristan, can match her on the ground and in the clouds. Chase doesn’t play well with others, but to save her country she may just have to put her life in the hands of the competition.

Breaking Sky grabs you from the very first few lines – and doesn’t let go. Chase, call sign Nyx, is a cadet at the United Star Academy, an airforce base for teens as they prepare to join the US military in the Second Cold War. Chase is one of two teams who fly the Streakers, jets so powerful only young and strong teen pilots can fly them.

I didn’t like Chase at first. She was bold, cocky, arrogant and reckless, but then you’d get these little glimpse of more hiding beneath the surface and of a backstory that explained the attitude. And as the story developed I began to love her courage, her fear and her determination. The Star is a military base and junior training academy, which results in the best mix of teen drama and military action. Chase and her RIO (and best friend) Pippin, and the other Streaker team are preparing for the trials that will showcase the Streaker jets’ abilities and, if the trials succeeds, will see the beginning of the Streakers’ dominance in the fight between the once powerful US and the now-dominant New Eastern Bloc. It is up to Chase and her fellow cadets to prove both their own worth and that of the experimental jets – so it’s really important not to mess up (or die). It’s just unfortunate that Chase is so very good at pushing the boundaries and generally creating chaos!

There are tense moments and high-risk flying manoeuvres, romance, friendship and humour, and then, WHAM! Out of nowhere – I did not see that coming. It made it all real and so very powerful. Cori McCarthy expertly combines flying lingo and details, base politics and teen interactions, and creates a suspenseful and dramatic read. Highly enjoyed.

Welcome back to the world of Rebel Wing – where war continues, females are slowly being allowed to join the military – this time as their female selves – and Aris is recovering at home. Recurring nightmares and a reluctance to resume flying as well as an order to go home and stay quiet are keeping her on her parents’ farm, where neighbours no longer make eye contact and her friends cannot understand why she would give up on Calix. A surprise, but very welcome and much waited upon, visit from Milek, gives Aris a reason to get back in the air. And the action just explodes from there.

I love Aris. I really love Milek. I loved Ward Galena Vadim and her interactions with Ward Pyralis. I love the action, the twists that take you by surprise and keep you guessing (and madly flicking pages), and I love the friendships and romance. I love the mix of military and sci-fi, written like a mix of contemporary and fantasy.

Not many second books in a series keep my attention, but Storm Fall is the perfect follow up to Rebel Wing. There is lots of action and development to keep you engaged but there is also plenty of good stuff and not everything goes wrong or is a total disaster, which I liked. You definitely need to read book one, Rebel Wing, first, but both are well worth it. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant. Can’t wait for book three.

Rebel Wing – Tracy Banghart – Rebel Wing #1 – Alloy Entertainment – Published 29 July 2014

With nail-biting adventure, a strong and capable heroine, delicious hints of romance and a great setting, Rebel Wing is a thoroughly enjoyable story.

Aris lives in a world currently being threatened by war. Living in Lux working as a crop duster on her father’s farm gives her a sense of security which is blown apart when the love of life Calix is selected for the military sector. Women are not allowed in the military so Aris prepares herself for a forced separation from Calix. She is surprised when she is approached by someone suggesting she work in the military sector putting her skills as a flyer to use. Determined to reunite with Calix, Aris must stretch herself beyond all limits and challenge everything she once thought she knew about herself and her world.

I really enjoyed this book. At first I wondered how it would manage to pull off a plot that has been well covered in ya fiction and a dystopian world with similarities to many we’ve seen before. However, within a few chapters I was sucked into Aris’s world. She is a relatable character, at first seeming nothing but a romantic love-struck fool, but soon shows her innate strength and determination. Not a huge fan of love triangles I surprised myself by quickly hoping something would happen with a certain Major. While this doesn’t develop much, there is enough to satisfy any romance lover and leaves plenty of room for developments in subsequent books. The plot was engaging and has plenty of action. I will be looking for the second book with much anticipation.
