Synopsis
It’s not every day you see your childhood friend and one-time crush on national news. Jackie Sellers just wishes it were under different circumstances. She can’t believe that Ian Lockwood is wanted in connection with a terrorist plot, and she’s determined to find him and help him clear his name. But she’s not the only one looking. The FBI wants him captured. The bad guys want him dead. Ian just wants to stay alive long enough to save thousands of innocent lives.
My thoughts
The action starts from the very first page in this story. There is little time to situate yourself before the characters are running for their lives. I have to admit I was a little confused at the start. The reader isn’t given a whole lot of information about Jackie and Ian’s past to begin with, and the story instead focuses on the action while the backstory is filled in as the plot develops. This certainly makes for an engaging read, though.
Jackie Sellers is sure Ian Lockwood isn’t a terrorist like the news is reporting. As someone who works to help those in dangerous situations she knows how best to help people who find themselves in a place where they can’t help themselves. Which is why she breaks into Ian’s house to discover what’s really going on. Before she knows it she and Ian are dodging spraying bullets and desperately trying to prove their innocence while also staying alive and helping to solve a looming terrorist attack.
No Place To Hide is full of non-stop action. Just when you think things are going to resolve, something else happens and suddenly there are more twists and flying bullets. I saw a lot of the twists coming but that in no way made them any less nail-bitingly tense. Perhaps the reason for my foresight (far be it from any particular skill of mine) is the chapters that switch viewpoints from Ian and Jackie to a variety of the other key players, bad guys and good guys alike. This keeps the story moving and also provides the reader with plenty of insight.
The focus of this book is certainly the suspense and action, with just a little romance and faith building along the way. The romantic tension between Jackie and Ian is hinted at pretty early on, although this is justified as they have a past and the focus is quickly returned to the unfolding drama. There is also a lot of other complicated backstory that is revealed along the way, and a great cast of secondary characters. No Place To Hide can be read as a standalone, even through it is the third book in the Hidden Identity series. Those who have read the previous books will recognise some familiar faces in connection to Jackie’s employment at Operation Refuge.
No Place To Hide is quick read, with great tension, sweet romance and edge-of-your-seat action. A perfect book for readers who love well-written, faith-based suspense.
