I’m always on the lookout for new books within the Christian suspense genre and Fatal Mistake by Susan Sleeman looked very promising. It didn’t disappoint. Fatal Mistake carries echoes of DiAnn Mills, Irene Hannon and Dani Pettrey’s knack for excellent suspense and authentic crime investigation.
Fatal Mistake has plenty of suspense, fantastic characters – including a team of specialist FBI agents many of whom are ex spec-op – and a deadly killer. Faith is also seamlessly woven into the story and the romance brings welcome relief from the action (though it creates a few heart-pounding moments of its own).
Tara knows her life is in danger when she discovers that her old childhood friend must be the Lone Wolf bomber who has already killed many women. The bricks of explosives and detailed plans left in her aunt’s pump house attest to that. Scared, she rings the FBI hotline but not before Oren returns home to find she has discovered his secret. Now in serious danger, Tara must decide if she will work with the special FBI team who is tasked with the arrest of the Lone Wolf or if she must go out alone to ensure her safety. Cal Riggings knows he needs Tara’s insight into the Lone Wolf if he is to prevent any more killings, but assuring Tara of her safety is hard when her life has already been put in serious danger. And then there is the attraction he feels towards her that risks getting in the way of his focus.

Indiana Jones meets The Da Vinci Code meets military action movie of your choice is an apt description for this book. Military strategy, archeological digs, ancient artefacts, Biblical history, even a touch of romance; Ronie Kendig stretches the boundaries of what we have come to expect from her military suspense. In Conspiracy of Silence we have the same military heroes, weapons, and tactics, but a whole other level is added that takes almost a fantastical turn.
I read this book and the prequel novella simultaneously. I started The Warrior’s Seal, then started Conspiracy of Silence, finished The Warrior’s Seal and then finished Conspiracy of Silence. I think reading The Warrior’s Seal first is advisable as it sets the scene for this series, introduces some of the main characters, especially Tox, and gives the reader an insight into the tone and subject type of Conspiracy of Silence. But if you choose to read Conspiracy of Silence first or alone, then I think you will be able to catch up without too much trouble. Simply know that four years ago, while stationed in Syria, Tox and his men were called in to rescue the President. The mission took a side turn when they discovered that his kidnapping was tied to a mysterious disease that was spreading and connected to the discovery of an ancient artefact. The Warrior’s Seal also gives the reader an insight into Tox before it all goes wrong for him, Tox as a leader and turn part of his team.

Wow. I think this book almost killed me. I’m not sure how I survived the tension, the heartbreak. I think Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ mind must be a very scary place most of the time – absolutely brilliant, but scary.

Deadly Encounter is the first book in the new FBI Task Force series. It continues DiAnn Mills’ tradition of offering engaging novels of suspense with a touch of romance and faith.
I enjoyed Deadly Encounter, more than I have Mills’ previous few books. There is a lot more detail provided to readers while also keeping a steady pace of action and developments in the case. There is also a greater amount of family and personal details in this story to balance the crime focus. That said, the middle section of this book dragged on a little and the resolution of the crime sometimes seemed so far away, something I’m sure law professionals struggle with everyday of their lives. I love how DiAnn Mills’ books are far more reflective of realistic crime fighting rather than the showy but unlikely big reveals of the crimes you see on TV shows or in other books.
