Display – Two new middle-grade releases = A winter wonderland

October and November 2018 presented two very exciting new books in the world of middle-grade fiction: The Ice Monster by David Walliams and Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Meltdown by Jeff Kinney. As our school year was in the process of winding down, we decided to celebrate the releases of these two titles at the start of the 2019 school year. The overt winter theme provided a wonderful tie between the two titles, enabling us to turn our junior reading room into a winter wonderland (in the middle of summer, mind you).

Please excuse the poor photography and mess – the displays went up just as we were finishing pulling the library apart for the long holiday break.

The Ice Monster display graces the reading room entrance. Once again I have used fabulous themed lettering from Instant Display. A range of recycled and freshly cut snowflakes joined the characters from Walliam’s book, which I found on the World of Walliam’s website. There is also a matching character reveal video available. Just inside the entrance we hung some falling snow – cotton balls threaded onto fishing line. More winter-y accessories, paper mammoths and other student-made craft items will be added to the displays and hung from the ceiling as our makerspace 2019 gets under way.

The Meltdown display is located within the reading room, above our comfy reading space. I cut the letters using the Coop Forged font. The giant Greg Heffley is a recycle from my previous Diary of a Wimpy Kid display, with the addition of a matching beanie. With some more snowflakes and all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series covers, this simple display came together really quickly. The Wimpy Kid Club has a fantastic range of videos and downloadable activities.
