Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Cassie Hobbes has a gift for profiling people. Her talent has landed her a spot in an elite FBI program for teens with innate crime-solving abilities, and into some harrowing situations. After barely escaping a confrontation with an unbalanced killer obsessed with her mother’s murder, Cassie hopes she and the rest of the team can stick to solving cold cases from a distance.

But when victims of a brutal new serial killer start turning up, the Naturals are pulled into an active case that strikes too close to home: the killer is a perfect copycat of Dean’s incarcerated father—a man he’d do anything to forget. Forced deeper into a murderer’s psyche than ever before, will the Naturals be able to outsmart the enigmatic killer’s brutal mind games before this copycat twists them into his web for good?

My thoughts

So brilliant! And so much fun. Killer Instinct is brilliantly written, the characters are awesome, and the plot is so very enthralling and clever.

Killer Instinct is the second book the in The Naturals series. You do need to read them chronologically to make sense of the continuing storyline, but with books this fantastic that is certainly no hardship. And for lovers of the first book, you need not worry about this sequel falling short – I would even say it is much better than the first. The characters are developing and it is great to see their continuing interactions and relationships.
After the events of the first book, the Naturals team is being kept on a short leash, restricted to closed cases only. But with a developing case that is too similar to the murders committed by Dean’s father to be coincidental, Cassie and her fellow Naturals can’t help but become involved to find the killer before the bodies start pilling up. Mystery, great suspense and crime fighting action, with a dash of teen drama (which, I might add, is neither overdone or in any way ridiculous), humour, friendship and romance. Jennifer Lynn Barnes has, once again, created a remarkable and thoroughly enjoyable read. Very highly recommended.

The publishers provided a complimentary copy of this book for reviewing purposes.
