What if you were a princess, but not the important one? Meren spends her life hiding or living a lie. Her purpose is to protect her sister, doubling in for her when things get dangerous. When Meren’s grandmother suddenly dies, her sister is set to be crowned Queen. Meren knows her life is about to get even more focused on her sister’s safety. She does not expect to get kidnapped so soon. Pity her kidnapper things he has the queen and not Meren. As Meren learns more about her kidnapper, the more she learns her sister might still be in grave danger and that it’s up to her to rescue her.

The romance is cute and I loved the beauty and the beast vibes as we start by fearing the Shadowmage and slowly learn that he is one of the good guys. A really good guy. It’s not hard to fall for him. There is also plenty of action, from their journey and then fight to get back to rescue Meren’s sister. The ending is pretty epic and left me excited about the next book in the series.

Honestly, I thought the sex and sexual references didn’t fit the story or timing and some sections (the Harpy scene) was just for sensation and unnecessary. It will mean I’ll be sharing this with much older readers. Just another fallout of authors and publishers trying to meet both the YA and NA market instead of focussing on one. I’d be placing this in the older reader section in my school library.

The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes. All opinions are my own.
