Book Week 2019 – Bookopolis Display

The theme for Book Week 2019 is Reading Is My Secret Power and I have had a lot of fun coming up with different displays to showcase this theme around the library. For our junior reading room, I went with Bookopolis: Home of those with secret powers. It takes the angle of superheroes, something that is eternally popular with our young readers, especially with the release of the Marvel Avengers: The Endgame movie earlier in the year. The display is bright and was very easy to put together.

Here are the elements I used in the display.

Lettering: I used the American Captain font via dafont.com for all my superhero-themed lettering. It is one of my favourite superhero-y fonts. To make the large lettering, I layered superhero symbols over the the letters in a word processing doc, gave the letters an outline and removed their fill. Printed, cut and done. The smaller lettering and blue letters for the yellow sign were cut on the library’s Cricut machine, again using the American Captain font.

Buildings: The buildings were super easy to make. I cut A3 card in yellow, blue and red, into strips of varying widths. I then cut rectangles and squares out of black paper and stuck them on.

Superhero readers: Hafuboti has to be one of my favourite librarian blogs. Seriously, she shares so many awesome ideas and beautiful artwork that she is happy for you to use and modify without attribution. For my superhero display, I used her My Hero(es) images and her Readers Assemble images.

Comic callout shapes: Using some background comic shapes, traditionally with the words bang, pop, bam and the like in them, I again used the American Captain font to add the words Read, Grown, Learn, Powers, etc.
