Book Week 2018: Find Your Treasure Display

Book Week 2018 Find Your Treasure Display

This display is inspired by the beautiful official Book Week 2018 artwork created by Anna Walker. I have always wanted to turn our circulation desk into a giant tree and the Book Week artwork and theme was the perfect excuse. You can read about the story behind Anna’s artwork on the CBCA Merchandise page.

I am lucky to have a large window onto which I painted the trunk using homemade window paint – you can find the recipe on this post. Of course, as soon as I was finished painting, the art department aide walked in and suggested it needed a bit of outlining and highlighting – so the tree might be adjusted as we go. The brown paint stands out better in real life rather than in my poor photography.

I used a range of leaves for this project – the majority recycled from past projects. The leaves stuck on the window were created from an old weeded book that had been well-loved and was ready for a new life. We used a green highlighter and black marker to colour and then outline a simple leaf shape, and our lovely student helpers cut them out.

The leaves attached to the 3D branches were a mix from our Wish Tree display and jungle display – some more intricate oak leaves and others simple heart-shaped leaves. My motto – never throw anything out!! The branches were created with brown paper (a local discount store had this cheaper than the brown paper rolls in the supermarkets).

Cut into metre lengths and then scrunched, we stapled leaves to the sections and stuck them to the wall and hung them from the lights – extending the painted tree beyond the window’s borders. The plan is to continue these branches all the way around the circulation desk and around the poles.

I cut the child explorer images and the lettering on our library’s Cricut machine.

We’ll continue to add to our giant tree in the lead-up to Book Week and add the beautiful posters and bunting purchased from CBCA.
