Book Review: Love in the Details

Synopsis

My thoughts

I really, really loved this story.

I have had a bit of a love-hate relationship with this second series of Year of Weddings novellas, and, as such, decided to stick to authors who I knew consistently wrote brilliant, faith-based romance. Becky Wade is certainly just such an author. I love her Porter Family series and eagerly await any new book she has to offer. So, I knew it would be worth reading her addition to the Year of Wedding series. I was right. This novella has all of Becky Wade’s trademark charming writing style, great characters and swoony romance.

Holly is a successful full-time writer, but she gave up on her own happily ever after eight years ago when she sacrificed her dreams for those of her boyfriend Josh’s. Now he has returned to her little town of Martinsburg, a wealthy and successful businessman, to stand up as best man in his best-friend’s wedding. But his proximity and their shared connection to the wedding has the past threatening to expose itself. Can Holly walk away with her heart intact, or will Josh’s return change everything.

This was just the book I needed: light, sweet and incredibly smile inducing. I felt myself relax every time I opened it up. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading it. The pace never felt rushed or the story contrived, which can so often happen in novellas. I would happily read more of Holly and Josh’s romance, but there really wasn’t anything missing from their story. It was the perfect mix of backstory (without any lengthy flashbacks) and redeveloping romance that felt fresh, new and exciting. I loved the faith aspects. They balanced the story and made it meaningful. I loved Holly, who was kind and sweet. I loved Holly’s friend Sam, who added humour and sass. And as for Josh… well all I can say is ‘sigh’. Toe-curling sigh. I loved that there wasn’t any unnecessary drama or big, mean characters, just romantic tension and anticipation.

If you haven’t yet sampled some of the novellas from the Year of Weddings series (1 or 2), then this is the perfect one to start with. And, if you have already read others then make sure you don’t miss Love in the Details. It is a must read for everyone who loves delicious faith-based romance.
