Book Week 2015: Books Light Up Our World Costume Inspiration

This year for Book Week, I need a costume that embodies both the light theme and links to a book or character.

Searching on my favourite sources for inspiration (Pinterest) I think I have come up with a winner: Katniss' Fire CapeKatniss Everdeen’s fire cape from The Hunger Games.

Although the fire cape didn’t make it into the movie (it was replaced with an outfit that sent off bursts of fire), in the book Katniss’ outfit is described as Fire Crown“I’m in a simple black unitard that covers me from ankle to neck. Shiny leather boots lace up to my knees. But it’s the fluttering cape made of streams of orange, yellow, and red and the matching headpiece that define this costume. Cinna plans to light them on fire just before our chariot rolls into the streets.”

Taking inspiration from luciduskeeper for Katniss’ fire cape, and a crown available on etsy, with a simple black base outfit and a lot of red, orange and yellow tulle, this is a costume I’m confident I can easily make.

Book Week 2015 Costume UPDATE: And make it I did.

Here is my Katniss costume. I made three separate capes from red, yellow and grey organza. I made a shoulder and breastplate from fake leather, and I covered a mailing tube with the same fake leather for a quiver, which I filled with arrows made from rolled-up paper and feathers. I made a small head piece using organza cut-offs, and used battery-powered string lights under the capes to light the whole thing up. It was as fun costume to wear and the students loved it.
