Synopsis
This edition of Buzz Books: Young Adult provides substantial pre-publication excerpts from 20 forthcoming young adult and middle grade books. Now everyone can share the same access to the newest YA voices the publishing industry is broadcasting for the fall/winter season. Extensive publishing information, including promotion plans and publicity contacts, are included in this NetGalley version. At the end of most excerpts, you will find a link to the full galley on NetGalley!
Excerpts include new work from established leaders in the field (James Dashner, Jennifer Donnelly, Patrick Ness, and Lauren Oliver), authors best-known for their adult books (Eleanor Herman and Cammie McGovern), and newsmaking titles such as the highly graphic History of Glitter and Blood, Illuminae, and The Thing About Jellyfish.
You will find a full range of YA titles previewed here —dystopian, romance, fantasy, sci-fi, humor, literary and more — and you will find some works for tweens and middle-grade readers. As always, many are sure to make bestseller and “best of” lists.

My thoughts
I love this book, which is a collection of excerpts from exciting upcoming releases from young adult and middle grade fiction. Here are the ones I really enjoyed. Which ones will make your to-read list?
The Thing About Jellyfish – Ali Benjamin
Buzz Books opens with a middle grade novel that promises to be both profound and moving. When Suzy’s friend drowns, Suzy is sure that it was the result of a rare jellyfish sting. As her parents worry about her sudden silence Suzy sets out to prove her theory.
Inherit the Stars – Tessa Elwood
Asa’s worlds are falling apart. Death, disease, riots and famine. But Asa will do anything to protect her dying sister and so, as the third daughter of the ruling House of Fane, she poses as her other sister who is to marry the heir of the House of Westlet. The first thing I noticed about this excerpt was the detail of Asa’s world. I was a little confused at first, but as I read I became very intrigued and I can’t wait to read more and learn how the ruling system works, how many planets there are and the culture of each of the ruling Houses. Asa promises to be a strong female lead, yet she constantly feels overshadowed by her older sisters. This one is definitely on my to-read list. Can’t wait.
This Raging Light – Estelle Laure
I have already read the whole of This Raging Light, and all I can say is read it. Like poetry trapped in prose body, this book sings. This book is about a girl, a strong, brave, wild girl who is left alone to care for her younger sister. It’s about finding and fighting for love. It’s about friendship. It’s about everyday magic and the people in life who share it. It’s about keeping on keeping on and then looking back and finding that you were strong enough after all. I loved it. Full review here.
Not If I See You First – Eric Lindstrom
Now this one sounds great. From the first few chapters you know that Parker is going to be a character who will have you laughing and rooting for her the whole way through. Parker’s perfectly happy speaking her mind and educating those around her that just because she’s blind doesn’t mean she’s deaf or stupid, in fact she is far from that. When the town’s two high schools merge Parker has a whole lot of newbies to educate, and the return of the boy who broke her heart to deal with. All this on top of grieving for her father.
A Step Toward Falling – Cammie McGovern
Emily and Lucas have nothing in common, apart from one moment where they both made a terrible mistake. They did nothing at all. Now they are sentenced to community service at a centre for people with disabilities after they failed to act when they saw one of their classmates being violently attacked. The writing style in this excerpt was instantly addictive. I had previously heard about this book but thought it might not be for me, but after reading this sample chapter I know I need to read it. Told in what I assume will be alternating points of view switching from Emily to Lucas, I can’t wait to read this book.
Dumplin’ – Julie Murphy
Willowdean is perfectly comfortable in her skin, but as she falls for her coworker she begins to doubt herself and her self esteem drops. So she enters a beauty pageant determined to change. I’m not entirely sure where this book will go, but it’s sure to be funny and heartwarming. Dumplin’ is another story in this collection that I was going to pass over, but having now started reading it I want to read the whole book.
