Synopsis

Before:
Kelsey and David became best friends the summer before freshman year and were inseparable ever after. Until the night a misunderstanding turned Kelsey into the school joke, and everything around her crumbled—including her friendship with David. So when Kelsey’s parents decided to move away, she couldn’t wait to start over and leave the past behind. Except, David wasn’t ready to let her go…

After:
Now it’s senior year and Kelsey has a new group of friends, genuine popularity, and a hot boyfriend. Her life is perfect. That is, until David’s family moves to town and he shakes up everything. Soon old feelings bubble to the surface and threaten to destroy Kelsey’s second chance at happiness. The more time she spends with David, the more she realizes she never truly let him go. And maybe she never wants to.

My thoughts

I didn’t really enjoy this book. I didn’t like the underlying themes, nor did I like any of the characters.

However, I really didn’t like Kelsey, who is the main protagonist. I found her to be stupid and rude. I don’t think there was a female in the book, aside from her mother and sister, whom she didn’t label a derogatory term based on their sexual habits – you know the words I mean. And I also felt that the whole story was overblown and rather ridiculous. I did read it in one sitting, though the main reason I kept reading was because I wanted to know what had happened in the past. What was that mistake made last year? What was so bad about it that Kelsey didn’t want to ever think about it again? What happened that was reason enough to break her heart? Again, I was disappointed with the findings. If there was one thing Kelsey was good at it was overreacting!

There were a few other things I didn’t like about this book, such as the cheating, sort-of love triangle and lack of decency between friends. But the book was certainly engaging and I did find David rather sweet in some sections. However, overall this just wasn’t the sort of book I enjoy.

The publishers provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

    Sounds good!

It was certainly interesting. I’m currently reading The Night We Said Yes by Lauren Gibaldi. It is shaping up to be very similar to Last Year’s Mistake – same before and after alternating chapters, same ‘something happened before that we don’t know about yet’. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the comment.

Sorry Rose. I have an e-copy, which I can’t transfer. Not too long to go now.
